Team

We are five students in the MET program at UBC. This assignment is part of ETEC565M, an experimental course in Mobile Education.

ED teaches Robotics and Construction at the high school level. A lifelong DIYer, he has formalized training and experience in several trade areas including industrial coatings, plumbing, and cabinet making. He is a certified electrical technologist who went into teaching technology-based courses in order to share and play with these interests every day. In his spare time Ed likes to play with embedded technology, take on woodworking projects, hike, cycle, camp, play hockey, and go tripping in his home built canoe.

JULIA is a lifelong DIYer who works as an educator and communications consultant. She currently teaches at a military college, which challenges her to bring artistic values, creative thinking and maker ethos to her students. Her interest in DIY is a natural fit for her multidisciplinary approach to teaching and life. Julia is a maker of ookBooks, remixing artifacts and telling the stories of cultures through patterns. She is also the curator of ART968, a project documenting artists and makers of the Sultanate of Oman.

MARY is a teacher at Rocky View Schools in Alberta. The integration of DIY/authentic learning is an ongoing occurrence in her class. She is involved with a division-wide STEAM community of practice, as she sees this approach to learning can provide students with the 21st competencies needed to be active participates in the community. Additionally, she continually intertwines her experiences of three teacher exchanges to Australia in her class, which fosters global perspectives and respect and awareness of diverse cultures. During her “free” time, she is a proud track and hockey mom and enjoys peaceful time at her cabin with her husband and family.

NATE is a ADST teacher in a small rural school in Rossland, British Columbia.  He has created a Maker Space in his school which consists of Raspberry Pi's, 3D printers, Virtual Reality, Robotics, and coding.  He loves all things digital and is currently working on experimenting with various filaments on his 3D printer at home.  He also spends most of his time at his local maker space working with the laser cutter, looking at new ways to design and fabricate various materials.  He has also embarked on learning programming on the Unity engine to help bring VR into his school and across his district.  When not working he spends time with his two small children and wonderful wife mountain biking or skiing.

NEIL is currently a music teacher with the Calgary Catholic School District where he has taught for nine years. He completed undergraduate degrees in Music and Education at the University of Calgary, finished Orff Schulwerk level III through the San Francisco International Orff Course. Neil has directed elementary through university level choral and instrumental ensembles, and many of his groups have gone on to achieve superior ratings at music festivals. An avid percussionist, he has performed with groups throughout southern Alberta such as the Calgary Civic Symphony, Alberta Winds, and the Calgary Wind Symphony. He is also a composer, with interest in electronic and experimental music. His interest in DIY learning stems from his philosophy that all individuals have the potential to learn a new subject when passion and environment collide in meaningful ways.
