Case Study

MUSIC

“Tell me, I forget; show me, I remember; involve me, I understand.”

Carl Orff, Composer and Music Education pedagogue

Introduction

Grade 9 students are exploring a new music course in the framework of Alberta’s Career and Technology Foundations program. Students have a basic understanding of music notation, musical form and have discussed motifs and the following compositional techniques: repetition, sequence, inversion, and retrograde.

The framework of CTF: Students respond to challenges set forth by the teacher in a particular career area. Students create a plan for how to organize a finished product and document their journey.

Challenge

Compose an original musical score in rondo form that incorporates a motif and the compositional techniques discussed in class. The finished product is an audio recording 2 minutes in length.

Reflection

How do CTF and this music project fit into the context of DIY learning? How would you use the DIY template proposed on this site to help navigate the complexities of this project? How does each of the three videos inform and celebrate the philosophy of DIY Learning?
