Socials Projects: Longhouse

Materials: Computer, Minecraft Edu, sheet of grid paper, pencil, coloured pencils

The problem: Can you create a Salish First Nations Longhouse in Minecraft? Where will you get the materials to build your longhouse? How will you lay out your plans for your longhouse to produce an accurate recreation?

1. You will need to gather information and models on what a Salish longhouse looked like and what it was like living there. Below are 4 links to sites you can use to gather information that you will need.

a)                                  This will be your main source of information, it has everything from a visual guide of the

dwelling, to types of fishing equipment used.  From this site you should be able to draw a birds eye view of what your longhouse will look like.

b)                                                                                                     these three links will take you to examples of

student built longhouses

c) Once you have enough information on your design you can start to draw your longhouse from a top down view, keep in mind you will need to determine how large it will be (measure in Minecraft blocks)

Now you will need to create a blueprint of your longhouse.  Below are some blueprint examples to help you to get started.  You should be combining the information you have looked over from the empathize section above to create as accurate recreation as you can within your world.

Now it's time to build, join the server in your groups and place your plan into action.  Below is an example of a completed project

Open your house up to other students to come and visit.  They can leave suggestions on what they liked and what improvements you could make to your model!
